When Causes of Insomnia are not diagnosable
Normally the causes of insomnia can be divided into environmental, medical and psychological reasons. However there is a form of insomnia that doesn’t fit into any of these criteria. This type also shows the well known symptoms like difficulties falling asleep or staying asleep. The problems connected with lack of sleep such as various medical dysfunctions increase the longer the period with no sleep lasts.
Primary Insomnia as it is called can only be diagnosed by eliminating any other of the usual causes. Thus many tests must be conducted which can be very confusing for the patient as none of the results seems to give an explanation why he cannot sleep. The question that arises is when there is no reason how can this disorder be treated?
It might be that you’ll have to stay for a night in hospital where the doctors will perform several tests like a Polysomnography test. You will further have to keep a sleep log where you write down the time you go to bed, when you wake up and for how long you stay awake. This way it’s possible to spot patterns in your sleeping rhythms and possible answers to why you have trouble sleeping.
If there is really no other way your practitioner might eventually prescribe you some sleeping pills. This is not the best option but since a certain amount of sleep is necessary to sustain your mental and physical health he may decide to do that. Alternatively you’ll want to consider alternative treatments such as hypnosis or brainwave entrainment.

It’s important for you to be aware of all the usual causes of insomnia and try to get them under control. Cut down on coffee, alcohol a cigarettes as going without with of any of these stimulating substances will help you sleep better. Also you should avoid eating heavy meals and physical exercise in the evenings for these things will keep you awake. In your bedroom there should be no light and if possible no noise at all and the temperature should be comfortable. Keep a normal sleeping rhythm and avoid naps during daytime or sleeping in even though you feel tired and drained.
